Planning Your River Adventure

Everything you need to know for a seamless, unforgettable paddling experience on the Gualala River

We've designed your experience to be effortless from start to finish. Simply book ahead, arrive ready to paddle, and let us handle all the logistics while you soak in the beauty of the river.

1

Reserve Your Adventure

We strongly encourage booking in advance to guarantee the perfect watercraft for your group. Reach out to us by phone or email with your preferred date, time, and the number and types of vessels you'll need. Early reservations ensure we have everything ready for you.

2

Arrive & Get Equipped

Show up at our Mill Bend location a few minutes before your scheduled time. You'll complete a quick check-in, settle payment via cash, check, or credit card, choose waterproof dry bags for your belongings, and get properly fitted with life jackets. We stock PFDs for children as young as 2 years old and adults up to 3XL. Feel free to bring your child's personal life vest if they're more comfortable with familiar gear.

3

Launch Into Nature

We transport all watercraft and equipment to your starting point—you just focus on the fun. Our experienced team will help you secure your gear inside the boats and provide paddling guidance if you'd like it. They know the river intimately and are eager to answer questions about current conditions, wildlife, and river highlights. We do all the heavy lifting; you do all the exploring.

4

Return & Relax

When you glide back to the launch beach after your journey, simply pull your vessel well onto shore to prevent drift. Place paddles beside the boats, unpack your personal items and any trash (use the bag provided), and store the dry bags and PFDs back in your boat. We track your expected return based on your rental agreement and will collect everything. If you're our final paddlers of the day, please swing the gate closed as you depart.

What to Wear on the Water

Remember: There's no such thing as bad weather, only clothing that doesn't match the conditions. Dressing smart transforms a good trip into a great one.

Layer up for maximum versatility and comfort. Whatever you pack, you can always peel off and stash in our waterproof dry bags (available in medium and large). Here's what works best:

  • Choose synthetic fabrics that pull moisture away from your skin and dry rapidly. Even on pleasant days, wet cotton equals discomfort. Skip the cotton; embrace performance materials.
  • Protect your head and face with a wide-brimmed hat or visor. UV rays penetrate even foggy skies, and reflection off the water intensifies exposure.
  • Consider a swimsuit as your base layer. The Gualala's clean waters warm into the mid-70s during summer—perfect for a refreshing dip. Since there are no designated changing spots along the riverbanks, starting with swimwear underneath makes everything easier.
  • Footwear is mandatory—no bare feet allowed! The river bottom is covered in coarse gravel that's uncomfortable without protection. Water sandals, aqua socks, old sneakers, or even flip-flops work well. Some paddlers add fleece or wool socks or neoprene booties for extra warmth.

What to Pack for Your Trip

  • High-SPF sunscreen is essential. UV rays bounce off the water surface and affect you from below as well as above, even on overcast afternoons.
  • Quality sunglasses shield your eyes from glare and harmful rays. Attach a retention strap, especially for prescription or high-value frames.
  • Beach towel or blanket makes lounging on the river's gravel bars far more pleasant.
  • Water bottle (plastic or metal only) keeps you hydrated while you paddle. Physical activity plus sun exposure equals quick dehydration—stay ahead of it.
  • Energy-boosting snacks fuel your adventure. Paddling is real exercise, and your body will thank you for the sustenance.
  • Picnic lunch and cooler if you're planning a longer excursion. Our canoes accommodate hard-sided coolers; kayaks work best with soft coolers and the dry bags we supply. Pull over anywhere along the banks or gravel bars for a scenic riverside meal.
  • Camera for memories. We can provide gasket-sealed protective boxes for most camera sizes—just ask. We love showcasing guest photos on our website if you'd like to share.
  • Your sense of adventure and wonder! This is what it's all about.
Important Guidelines: Open fires are prohibited anywhere on the riverbanks or beach sandbar. Please pack out all trash—we're happy to provide garbage bags. If any waste ended up in a dry bag, just dump it in the receptacle at our launch site and let us know if the bag needs cleaning.
